Our City, Our Charter, Our Future

For the first time in nearly 30 years, Angelenos have the chance to rewrite how our city works — and this time, the people are leading.

What’s Happening Now

Los Angeles is rewriting its City Charter — the city’s constitution that decides who holds power, how decisions are made, and how billions of public dollars are spent.

But the current reform process is unfolding behind closed doors. Public input is capped at one-minute comments. The timeline is rushed. And the biggest issues shaping our future — policing, housing, climate, AI — aren’t even up for discussion.

Rewrite LA was built to change that — giving everyday Angelenos a voice in rewriting the very system that governs their lives.

What We’re Proposing

Rewrite LA complements the city’s official Charter Reform process by bringing the public directly into the conversation.

We’re launching a Civic Assembly of everyday Angelenos to deliberate on the same core topics as the Charter Commission — plus Mini Assemblies tackling the big issues politicians don’t want to touch.

Through digital participation tools and story-driven content, Rewrite LA will make the process visible, inclusive, and inspiring — ensuring the rewriting of LA’s constitution truly belongs to its people..
